A parish is technically a piece of land. It’s a section of a diocese that has the right number of churchgoers to have a local church community, with one main church building and one pastor. But when you refer to a parish, you’re usually talking about more than the physical space; you're also describing the people who attend the church! So when someone says, "Our parish is thriving," it means there's a full congregation and enough funds to maintain the church in good condition. Parish members do more than just attend church, though- they contribute their time and talents to the running of the parish by volunteering, organizing community activities, planning social events, and — most important — coffee time after Mass on Sunday mornings!
Sharing our time, talents, and monetary resources to support the work of a parish is the responsibility of all parishioners. We also state our desire to belong to a parish community by formally registering in the parish- this rather simple act brings both responsibility and commitment. It means that we want and intend to gather each Sunday with our brothers and sisters in Christ, to worship God, and to support the work of the parish, and the Catholic Church as a whole.
